Stress state characterization of ductile materials during scratch abrasion

چکیده

Abrasive wear limits the lifetime of many machine components. Most empirical models relate abrasive resistance to material hardness. In reality, however, other properties are also influencing as scratch abrasion damage follows from a highly complex stress trajectory upon scratching. Numerical (finite element) simulation requires use model, which translates this into degradation and removal. include first two invariants. However, fully incorporating trajectories that occur during may require with dependence third deviatoric parameter (Lode angle). This paper serves an a-priori study evaluate states abrasion. Three mechanisms (ploughing, wedging, cutting) considered. Hereto, results extensive parametric using elastic-plastic finite element simulations indentation process discussed. Complex, non-proportional variations in state values observed Distinct identified for three abovementioned mechanisms. These critically discussed motivate selection suitable rigorous analysis processes associated • Stress investigation abrasion; ploughing, wedging & cutting. Abrasion imposes triaxiality Lode angle. Damage is predicted at levels lower than ?0.33. 3D nature causes angle differ zero. Requirements continuum model presented.

Scratch and abrasion properties of polyurethane-based micro- and nano-hybrid obturation materials.

Polyurethane-based micro- and nano-hybrid composites were produced with controlled porosity to be used as obturation materials. In addition to hydroxyapatite (HAp) micro-particles in the composites, two different ceramics particle types were also added: alumina micro-particles and silica nano-particles. Particles of different sizes provide the materials with improved mechanical properties: the ...

Ductile or Partial Ductile Mode Machining of Brittle Materials

This paper reports ductile or partial ductile mode machining of silicon, glass and some advanced ceramics. Results are presented using scanning electron micrographs of the machined surfaces. Grinding and lapping operations using inexpensive machine tools could produce ductile streaks on surfaces of these brittle materials under good conditions. Manufacture of spherical glass lenses by the fract...

Simulation of Crack Growth in Ductile Materials

During crack growth of real materials, the total energy released can be partitioned into elastic and dissipative terms. By analyzing material models with mechanisms for dissipating energy and tracking all energy terms during crack growth, it is proposed that computer simulations of fracture can model crack growth by a total energy balance condition. One approach for developing fracture simulati...

Property maps for abrasion resistance of materials.

Using mechanics models of contacting surfaces under both normal and tangential loads, a mechanistic framework has been developed for assessing material resistance to initiation of abrasive damage. Solutions are presented for the critical loads to initiate yielding and cracking at blunt contacts, as well as those to attain a prescribed plastic penetration depth and cause cracking from within the...
